The Thundering Blurb Show – 3/31/10

It was all Matt Waldman all the time as we get the author of the Rookie Scouting Portfolio on the line for an entire hour to talk about the RSP (which conveniently drops 4/1).

We cover the three big offensive skill positions: quarterback, running back and wide receiver.

Some of the bullet points:

Quarterbacks

  • Matt’s a pretty big fan of Jonathan Crompton and has him ranked 5th.
  • Juice Williams is ranked 9th but is very boom or bust.
  • Tim Tebow isn’t even in Matt’s Top Ten. We expect lightning to strike Waldman down any second now.
  • Matt’s thoughts on some lesser covered QBs who might be worth a look late.

Running Back

  • Like me, Matt loves him some Toby Gerhart. We talk about why.
  • We also cover why he has CJ Spiller at 6. The answers will shock and horrify you (actually they probably won’t).
  • We talk about why he isn’t as high on Jonathan Dwyer as some.
  • We also touch on the prospects of late round possibility Deji Karim from S. Illinois and Anthony Dixon from Mississippi State.

Wide Receivers

  • We talk about how he’s a genius for ranking Damian Williams from USC as his #2 receiver.
  • What are Marty Gilyard’s prospects?
  • Will Jordan Shipley succeed at the next level?
  • We talk another dark horse prospect, this time as a wide receiver.

Matt’s great and I could do two hours chatting with him.

NFL COmbine Coverage and Appearences!

Hey folks -

Have been busy in the batcave setting up some work for one of the most important weeks in football – the NFL Combine. Nothing compares to actually seeing a player PLAY but this is darn near the next best thing and these days you can get a better seat than the press AT the Combine (who cannot witness the workouts, only interview players and staff after said workouts).

If you want to know just what is going and how it impacts your favorite team, your fantasy season or the world economy, I can guarantee you answers for two of the three items listed.

Over the course of the next week I will be hosting or appearing on numerous shows, mostly on NFLDraftbible’s All Access Football shows. At the top of the blog, you can see the general list (which I will add to if other things crop up). Here are some details on some of the shows.

The Thundering Blurb Football Show – tonight (Wednesday at 10pm PST/7pm PST) – Join me as I get you set for the NFL Combine with news and notes as well as an interview with California OLB Zack Follett.

Guest on All Access Football (approx. 10:10pm EST/ 7:10 pm PST) – I’ll be appearing with the guys from NFLDraftbible for a short guest spot where I am sure we’ll talk some Pac 10 prospects and expectations for the coming week of action.

Hosting All Access Football – Combine Show – Saturday 10pm EST/ 7pm PST – Join me for exclusive coverage of the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine. Special Guests: Justin Van Fulpen of Verius Sports * Nick Miller of Southern Utah * Darrell Mack, Greg Newman & Freddie Brown of Utah. Also discussion of the kickers (yes kickers) O-Linemen and TEs who worked out today.

Hosting All Access Football – Combine Show – Sunday 10pm EST/7pm PST – Join me for exclusive coverage of the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine. Special Guests: Will Harding of Fresno State * James Pierce of Langston. Also discussion of the QBs, WRs and RBs who worked out today.

Guest on All Access Football (approx 10:10pm EST/7:10pm PST) – Again appearing with the guys from NFLDraftbible.com to discuss the week so far as well as some PAc 10 prospects as always.

There could be some more over the course of the week and if so, I’ll get them to you. Also, expect at least one article over the weekend here at the Blurb. I’ll have some stuff at Draftguys.com shortly as well as some player interviews at NFLDraftbible in the coming weeks.

We’re ramping up hard – hold on tight, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

So we’re looking on target for the regular return of myself on the weekly Thundering Blurb show as the home office is almost set up.

But I want to take a moment to thank to good friends who covered for me the last two weeks.

Rick Serritella of NFLDraftbible.com took over the slot with the Draftbible’s All Access football show – if you missed it or if you haven’t checked it out before, take a listen. And check out the site, nfldraftbible.com, for all the latest and greatest on the NFL Draft news front. The folks over there run a great site and I look forward to doing lots with them this year.

And of course the verbose and energetic Cecil Lammey – he of the Audible, the Drive Block and Footballguys.com – who took over the Blurb last night. As he said on the show, we’ve known each other for a bunch of years now, going back to the defunct FFAdvisor and then fantasyfootballjournal.com days before he launched the Audible over at FBGs. Like with Rick and the Draftbible.com, if you haven’t seen/heard Cec’s work over at Footballguys, check it out. Also make sure you head over to the Draftguys.com site and keep your eyes peeled for another great season of DraftguysTV. Again, I look forward to doing tons with Cecil and the Draftguys all year long.

I’m heading back to bury internet cables, but starting next week, we’ll be ramping the site back up and getting back on track, linking you up to all the latest and greatest takes on NFL and Draft news with my take on each and every one, as well as articles and thoughts written by myself.

Child’s Play

You will notice that a banner has been placed on the top of the blog for a Charity Called Child’s Play. This charity, run by a couple of webcomic artists, raises money and gifts fro kids in Childrens Hospitals all around the US.

While it was predominantly conceived by a video game comic in part to show that yes, games do care (funny how much that sounds like some of the NFL commercials I have seen), they do a tremendous amount of good. I contribute when my wallet allows and while I know well how tough these economic times are for many of us, I do encourage you to contribute any little bit you can.

I won’t bore you with why this matters so much to me – as many of you are parents, uncles, aunts, what-have-you, you can guess why. But it is a worthy cause and I know the money and toys go to hospitals and kids that need it.

This runs until around Christmas, so save a few pennies and see what you can do. The banner will stay there until the charity is done for the year and links directly to the main site.

Thundering Blurb & Fantasy Sports Channel on ITunes Radio!

Hey folks – just reiterating what was on the Stampede today – but BTR’s Fantasy Sports Channel (and of course The Thundering Blurb Fantasy Show) is now part of iTunes Radio. If you have the iTunes application, you can find their radio programming under “LIBRARY” in the top left corner. Click on that and look for “Sports Radio”. BTR Fantasy Sports feed is like second.

So yet another way to listen to us all yammer!

Friday through Monday Scheduling Change

Hi folks!

Just a little heads up – this weekend will be a little odd for the Blurb. I will be traveling for a family function so the schedule for the weekend – which admittedly is always fairly loose – will be very different.

The Daily Stampede and my appearance on 1230 ESPN will go as normal. But I will try to frontload a ton of the rankings Thursday night and Friday morning as I will be traveling all Friday afternoon.

The College Top 25 review will more than likely happen very late Sunday, possibly Monday after I return. In all likelyhood, my ability to be updating prior to gametime for Sunday will also be hampered. I will do what I can for game time decisions, but unfortunately my access to internet could be very limited.

So all the college stuff will get done Monday – if I can do it at all. I will be unable to watch most of the games so I will just do my best to cover it.

Any lineup questions you have would be better served if they came to me early – before Friday afternoon. Again I just don’t know how bad my access will be this weekend. I will endeavor to update as I can and return emails, but while my trip will be brief, it will be very busy as well.

Just a little heads up this morning as I begin to prepare to be gone. It was pretty unavoidable and I hope that you guys will bear with me for this. I have one other trip in October, but that will be longer and my ability to continue this work in our normal manner will be much easier.
